Cross Inscribed Slab, Isle of Doagh

Carved Stone

Standing in a field just before the pasture gives way to sand hiles, is a slab of which little information exists.

It takes the form of a carved slab not unlike a standard headstone. The inscriptions are highly distinctive like “Xs” and “Os”, but closer inspection reveals that they are in fact little carve crosses.

What exactly these are is unclear but there is a similarity to crosses carved by medieval pilgrims when visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

Was there an ancient pilgrimage in Inishowen to cause the carving of these mysterious marks?

There are many other fine examples of enigmatic rock art scattered throughout the Isle of Doagh.
