Ardmore Gallan, Muff

Ardmore Gallen

Ardmore Gallen

Ardmore Gallen

Ireland is dotted with standing stones. Time has obscured their meaning or precise function, but it has been suggested that they may mark burial places or tribal boundaries.

The Ardmore Gallen is notable as the inscriptions (dating from the Bronze Age) denote that it had some more definite use - however obscure at this stage.

Its monumental appearance sitting as it does in good pasture overlooking Lough Foyle contributes to distinguish it from other similar stones.
